Jammu-Srinagar, Aug 8 (PTI) Curfew was today imposed and
army staged flag march in the border town of Poonch in the
wake of violence by protesters over the Amarnath land row
even as life remained crippled in the Kashmir valley
following a strike called against economic
blockade.
Curfew was clamped and army conducted flag march in Poonch
town early this morning as a precautionary measure following
incidents of stone pelting and tension there yesterday, an
official spokesman told PTI.
Activists of the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS),
spearheading the agitation, had yesterday forced closure of
schools, other educational institutes, government offices
and banks in Poonch.
They had also indulged in stone pelting on post offices and
the telephone exchange in a bid to close down Central
government establishments in the town.
The spokesman said curfew was relaxed for varying periods
in Jammu, Kathua, Samba and Udhampur towns as there were no
reports of fresh violence.
However, no curfew relaxation was given in the border town
of Rajouri and Jourian area in Akhnoor, he said.
Life was thrown out of gear in Srinagar and other parts of
the Valley following a strike call given by Jammu and
Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) against the economic
blockade in the wake of the Amarnath land stir. PTI
